A significant part of traditional folk music is meant for dancing, and the new ensemble Keelepeksjad embraces this rhythmic essence, drawing from both Estonian and international folk traditions. The key elements are electric energy, improvisation, guitar playing, and groove, all while respecting and keeping the traditional source material in focus. The guitars of Jaak Sooäär and Marek Talts allow for the performance of lively melodies in a polyphonic and multi-voiced manner, taking even a well-known polka tune to completely new trajectories. Henno Kelp grooves on the bass guitar with contemporary rock sounds, while Karl-Juhan Laanesaar creates an energetic rhythmic foundation for it all.
Freshly released for Jazzkaar, the debut album of Keelepeksjad, Kalev tuli koju(AVA Muusika), features arrangements of Estonian folk dances as well as compositions by Jaak Sooäär, directly influenced by Estonian folk tunes.
Multitalented writer, singer, and guitarist Jaan Pehk performed at Jazzkaar in 2019 alongside Jarek Kasar and Kirke Karja. His creations, which have been recognised with multiple awards in the fields of ethno and folk music, are deeply influenced by local folk traditions and marked by sensitive and inventive use of language. A perfect match for Keelepeksjad!
