News

On its opening day, 23 April, the 34th Tallinn International Festival Jazzkaar will fill different venues in Telliskivi Creative City with music. The audience on the day of free concerts will be delighted by performances by Minimal Wind Quartet, Sofia Rubina-Hunter with her band and Jüri Pootsmann, added by a music production workshop for children by Sander Mölder.

The Telliskivi Outdoor Gallery, balcony of Põhja Konn, Vaba Lava, Fotografiska Tallinn and Velvet will host performance by wonderful artists representing the wide spectrum of jazz. “We will have very cool artists performing on the opening day of Jazzkaar! New ensembles and arrangements, changed lineups and fresh creations – you won’t hear or see anything ordinary on the day of free concerts. There is only one classic wish: may it be a sunny day!”project manager Birgit Krullo describes this year’s day of free concerts.

The day of free concerts will kick off with the traditional morning yoga session hosted by Jazzkaar and MyFitness at Vaba Lava. Yoga instructor Kadi Reintam’s morning stretch exercises are enhanced by micaxsan & slow.burn aka resident DJ at HALL Club, DJ Micaela Saraceno and guitarist Jaan Jaago. The Sunday will continue with Minimal Wind Quartet gently floating between, and above, pop, indie and r’n’b music on the balcony of Põhja Konn, followed by singer Tiina Adamson performing with her quintet at Fotografiska Tallinn.

Invited by the French Institute, the charming French photographer André Perlstein will visit Tallinn to open his portrait exhibition of the world’s jazz legends at the Outdoor Gallery of Telliskivi Creative City. Surrounded by photos of Nina Simone, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald and others, the West Coast Quartet led by trumpeter Jason Hunter will recall their street musician days, playing jazz classics of the 1950s. Composer and musician Peedu Kass will speak about the history of jazz in photos, followed by a conversation with the photographer at Velvet.

At the same time, children are invited to the workshop of the Tallinn children’s jazz festival Kräsh at Vivita, where composer, DJ and producer Sander Mölder will introduce them the world of music production. The day continues withJüri Pootsmann’s Jazzkaar debut at Fotografiska Tallinn. We are expecting the audience to return to Velvet by 3 pm, to hear the vocal quintet Viljandi Vox perform their original songs as well as arrangements of jazz and pop music. The day of free concerts will be ended at Fotografiska Tallinn by the dazzling jazz and soul singer Sofia Rubina-Hunterwith her band, performing tunes from their previous albums as well as their new one, to be released this autumn. Throughout the day, a record market will be open in Jazzkaar’s information tent. All events will be free for all visitors. The day of free concerts will be followed by the opening concert of Jazzkaar 2023, Ocean of Guitars, where the esteemed jazz, rock and contemporary music composers and musicians Andre Maaker, Laur Joamets and Peeter Vähi will introduce the multi-layered emotional world and endless possibilities of the guitar.
