April 22 is a perfect Sunday, full of spring and fresh music when the free concert day of Jazzkaar takes place at Telliskivi Loomelinnak, Tallinn. The free concert day has been an inseparable part of the festival program, offering music, dance, art, local history tours, record market and jazz quiz. The day is meant for everyone – families, elderly and youth.
The day starts with morning yoga where the mood is set by Liina Saar’s meditative vocal journey. When the body is warmed up, the swing dance workshop for Charleston Solo offers faster steps to learn. The moving continues with history tours led by local historian Jaak Juske who seeks and tells stories of various behind-the-corner spots and venues of Telliskivi area.
The music program for the free event is diverse. From beloved Estonian singer-songwriters Mari Jürjens and Liisi Koikson duo concert to spellbinding instrumental music by double bass-trumpet duo Ara Yaralyan and Jason Hunter.
This year’s focus is on young people. The band Hommage who gave a memorable performance at the youth band competition Noortebänd, have their concert. Young and talented singer Marianne Leibur performs with her string ensemble on the youth stage.
Youngsters interested in DJ-ing can learn a thing or two from DJ Heidy Purga. Artist Andrei Kedrin invites participants to the jazz portrait workshop; and everyone can test their knowledge in jazz music at the annual Jazz Quiz.
Immensely popular last year, the family band format returns. This year, the concerts of Brothers Mälgand and Brothers Tubli take place at the Pelgulinna culture house. The jazz record market in Punane Maja sells old and new records and vinyl, rarities and off-the-press albums from Estonian musicians.
The day ends with grandeur. Estonian Dream Big Band, conducted by Raul Sööt, celebrates its 20th anniversary. The occasion is joined by special guests Manuel Dunkel, Liisi Koikson and Elina Hokkanen.
All events are free entrance!
Jazzkaar thanks the Estonian Authors’ Society, Tallinn Sports and Youth Department and MyFitness Sports Club.
