This year’s Christmas Jazz headliner Lizz Wright belongs to the absolute top of the vocal jazz and will give a concert for the Estonian audience for the second time. In 2012 as the headliner of festival Jazzkaar she mesmerized with her velvety voice, emotional presence and warmth. This time, Lizz Wright performs on 9th of December at the Alexela Concert Hall with the Estonian Dream Big Band conducted by Siim Aimla. Singers’ deep sounding r’n’b, soul, folk, jazz and gospel sounds will burst in flames in emotion. Her performance is Norah-Jones-like simplistic, and her voice is compared to legendary Nina Simone and Cassandra Wilson. The singer feels herself at home in all genres.
From a religious family, Lizz grew up with choral music and gospel. In 2000, she joined the vocal group Spirit and the success spurred young singer to begin a solo career. Her breakthrough concert was Billie Holiday gala in 2002 at Hollywood Bowl and Los Angeles Times wrote: “The singer stepped on the stage unknown but left as a star.”
Lizz Wright’s debut album “Salt” was released in 2003 by a record company Verve. By now, the artist has released six albums. Beside the gospel-based “Fellowship” (2010), there are also reworks of Nick Drake and the Bee Gees. The album “Grace”, released last year, runs on the American blues and folk heritage, and also the role of self-creation has become increasingly important for the young singer.
At Christmas Jazz concert Lizz Wright will perform with Estonian Dream Big Band. This is one of the major concerts for big bands 20th anniversary year. Enchanting sounds by the orchestra, fascinating performance by Lizz Wright and a rich program from Ella Fitzgerald’s songs to the singers’ own favourites promise a special concert experience.
Tickets are sold at Piletilevi. Lizz Wright (USA) & Estonian Dream Big Band will perform at Alexela Concert Hall on 9th of December at 7 pm.
