Oh, Detroit – the Motor City! The birthplace of Motown, Stevie Wonder, and techno, this legendary musical hub draws from the same deep well of inspiration that also fuels the James Carter Organ Trio – a powerhouse of groove-driven, soulful jazz, where drums and the Hammond organ create depth and fluidity, while saxophones bring melody and soul. Having played together for over 20 years, this trio of jazz legends invites Jazzkaar audiences to experience the very essence of Afro-American music. Their Jazzkaar set will be inspired by the fiery sound of tenor saxophonist Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis (1922–1986), promising a performance brimming with passion, energy, and swing.

James Carter is one of contemporary jazz’s most extraordinary improvisers, and his organ trio is a rare blend of power and virtuosity. With the rhythmic support of star organist Gerard Gibbs and drummer Alex White, the James Carter Organ Trio has remained fresh, dynamic, and deeply inspired over the years. In 2019, the trio released their live album, James Carter Organ Trio: Live From Newport Jazz, under the legendary Blue Note Records label. Reflecting on his roots, Carter shares: “Growing up in Detroit meant plenty of Blue Note B-3 grooves. You’d hear Jimmy Smith while somebody’s passing the baked beans and the ribs and all that other good stuff. The organ has always been a part of the African-American Diaspora.”

Throughout his illustrious career, James Carter has shared the stage and recorded with some of jazz’s most iconic figures, including Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, and Charles Mingus – and the list goes on! The jazz authority DownBeat has repeatedly named Carter Saxophonist of the Year, and in 2024, the JJA Jazz Awards (Jazz Journalists Association) honoured him as Multi-Instrumentalist of the Year. With an exceptionally vast repertoire that spans nearly the entire history of jazz, Carter stands as one of the genre’s most versatile and accomplished musicians.
