Jazzkaar’s Autumn Jazz 2024 will showcase a fresh and dreamy lineup this September, featuring the ensemble Alonette, the French cello virtuoso duo Courtois & Couturier, and the Hungarian group Balázs Bágyi New Quintet with their interpretation of pianist Erik Satie’s works. At the opening concert, beloved Estonian jazz musicians will pay tribute to legendary American guitarist and composer Pat Metheny in honor of his 70th birthday.
“Artists who have transformed the musical landscape with their unique style and charisma are rare. Pat Metheny is a revered figure across multiple generations and one of the most cherished names in the guitar world. For the opening concert of Autumn Jazz, Estonian performers are honouring Metheny on his milestone birthday, and jazz enthusiasts in Tallinn eagerly anticipate hearing the guitar virtuoso once more,” says Anne Erm, the artistic director of Jazzkaar, recalling Metheny’s performance at the 2014 Jazzkaar with the Pat Metheny Unity Group.
On Saturday, 7 September, guitarist Jaak Sooäär, pianist Kristjan Randalu, bassist Janno Trump and drummer Ramuel Tafenau will take the stage at the Kumu Auditorium to perform the music of Pat Metheny. Led by Sooäär, this project features a selection of favourite pieces from the extensive repertoire of Pat Metheny and his longtime collaborator, pianist Lyle Mays. Rather than merely replicating the originals, the ensemble will present their own interpretation, aiming to share the joy of Metheny’s remarkable music with the audience.
Autumn Jazz continues with the gentle resonance of string instruments. On 21 September, internationally acclaimed French cello virtuosos Vincent Courtois and Eric-Maria Couturier will perform at Fotografiska Tallinn, exploring the intersection of jazz and contemporary music. On 28 September, Hungarian drummer Balázs Bágyi’s New Quintet will present a jazz interpretation of French pianist Erik Satie’s minimalist works at Kumu in Tallinn, with a follow-up performance on 29 September at the Tubin Hall of the Eller School in Tartu. Also on 29 September, Kumu will host a soothing late autumnal performance featuring Anett Tamm’s new ensemble, Alonette. Tamm’s silky vocals will blend 70s pop influences with modern sounds, accompanied by the exceptional Estonian musicians Erki Pärnoja, Raun Juurikas, Marti Tärn and Martin Petermann.
