A much anticipated sold out show took place as an early Christmas present for Estonian Beatlemaniacs this Thursday evening at the Noblessner Foundry. The present was tastefully wrapped by Estonian singers Marten Kuningas and Robert Linna with the help of accompanying musicians Jaak Sooäär, Henno Kelp and Kristjan Kallas. Having stood out with tribute projects in the past (“Tribute to David Bowie”, 2016; “Known and Unknown Jimi Hendrix 75”, 2017), both singers managed to honor the legacy of The Beatles while staying true to themselves.
As it is widely known to music lovers, The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. With the most prominent members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison the band stayed active throughout the 60’s and 70’s. The tribute act featured their music from 1966-1969 including some of the biggest hits and the performers’ personal favourites.
The evening began with songs most familiar to me: “Hey Bulldog” from the bands’ hit animated film Yellow Submarine, Harrison’s heartwarming “Here Comes the Sun” and Lennon-McCartney’s “Strawberry Fields Forever”. Lead vocals were split between Kuningas and Linna making an interesting and dynamic combo – the arrangements played especially well for covers of “Happiness is a Warm Gun” and “She’s Leaving Home”. Kuningas’ performances of “Taxman” and “Day Tripper” were my personal favourites. The straightforward yet casual feel of the lyrics was delivered with ease. The band’s sound came alive with “A Day in the Life”, a powerful and psychedelic mayhem filled the hall. “Let It Be”, followed by “Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey” and “All You Need is Love” made for a heartwarming climax, leaving the hall in standing ovation chanting the choruses.
