In December 2015 the whole world celebrates the icon chanson singer Edith Piaf’s 100th birthday. Christmas Jazz Festival decided to dedicate a show to the musician’s eternal memory.
Estonian younger generation singer Rebecca Kontus put a lot effort to make this concert memorable. Before each song she read some periscopes of the lyrics and the audience enjoyed both the legacy of Edith Piaf and the respect and love Rebecca Kontus put into it. On the back of the stage there was a large screen where different old and new Paris photos were projected, creating a unique French mood in the auditorium.
Her musical experience and professionalism accompanied with her French jazz educational background was very suitable for Edith Piaf’s memorable event.
Rebecca was not alone on the stage. She was accompanied by two father-son tandems – of Taavo Remmel on double bass and his son Joel Remmel on piano; and Tiit Kalluste on the accordion with his son Kaspar Kalluste on drums. The performance of two generations in the band and Rebecca’s warm voice formed a nicely structured combination.
Rebecca Kontus sang “La vie en Rose”; “Padam padam”, “La Foule” and many famous compositions of the legendary heritage of Edith Piaf. She especially set up her voice for “Non Je ne Regrette Rien”. As American writer Stephen King has said about French language “It is a language that turns dirt into the Romance”. And yes – the concert was full of romance.
