On the opening night of the spring Jazzkaar, renowned pianist Kristjan Randalu<\/strong>, one of the brightest stars of our time, will unveil fresh interpretations of composer Jaan R\u00e4\u00e4ts<\/strong>\u2019s miniatures. \u201cI knew Jaan since childhood. Later, when I was working on my first orchestral compositions, he guided me as a mentor,\u201d Randalu reminisces, revealing that the idea of reimagining R\u00e4\u00e4ts\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Marginalia<\/span><\/i>\u00a0has been evolving for decades. For this extraordinary evening, Randalu has specifically assembled a quintet to breathe life into this new work on stage.<\/span><\/p>\n Jaan R\u00e4\u00e4ts\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Marginalia<\/span><\/i> was first published in 1981. The composer is recognised as a leading representative of the neoclassical style, introducing an explicitly anti-romantic expression in Estonian music \u2013 active, playful, and free from emotional excess. R\u00e4\u00e4ts himself remarked that he found this characterisation surprising, as he considers himself a lyricist at heart. Randalu\u2019s first arrangements of\u00a0<\/span>Marginalia<\/span><\/i>\u00a0were created during his teenage years in Germany. Now, with his extensive experience, Randalu\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Marginalia<\/span><\/i> and Dividends<\/span><\/i>\u00a0is ready for the stage.<\/span><\/p>\n At the opening concert, Randalu will be joined on stage by Norwegian guitarist and electronic musician Eivind Aarset<\/strong>, with whom he has performed for five years in Dhafer Youssef<\/strong>\u2019s ensemble, Taavi Kerikm\u00e4e<\/strong> on synthesisers, Mihkel M\u00e4lgand<\/strong> on double bass, and Hans Kurvits<\/strong> on drums.<\/span><\/p>\n Will Kristjan Randalu\u2019s interpretation highlight the motoric, the lyrical, or perhaps uncover an entirely new dimension of R\u00e4\u00e4ts\u2019s work?
